Why AI Agents Require a New Security Model Beyond Service Accounts

In the traditional world of Identity and Access Management (IAM), we had a simple bucket for anything that wasn't a human: the **Service Account**.

Whether it was a CI/CD pipeline, a backup script, or a monitoring tool, we gave it a service account, assigned it a long-lived API key, and (too often) forgot about it.

As we step into the Agentic Era, treating AI agents like traditional service accounts is a recipe for disaster. Here is why the old model is breaking down and why we need a new approach for the age of autonomous AI.

The Problem with "Set and Forget"

Service accounts are typically static. You define a role—say, `read-only-S3`—and assign it. The script runs, does its job, and repeats.

AI Agents are dynamic. An agent tasked with "Market Research" might start by scraping public websites, then decide it needs to cross-reference internal sales data in Salesforce, and finally draft a summary in Google Docs.

If you treat this agent like a service account, you have two bad options:

**Over-provisioning:** Give the agent "Admin" access so it never gets blocked. (Security nightmare).

**Micro-management:** Manually update permissions every time the agent hits a roadblock. (Productivity killer).

Intent vs. Permission

The core difference lies in **Intent**.

A traditional script has no intent; it has instructions. An AI agent has a goal (an intent) and figures out the instructions on the fly.

Security for AI agents needs to move beyond "What is this account allowed to do?" to "Is what this agent *trying* to do consistent with its stated goal?"

For example, if a "Customer Support Agent" suddenly starts trying to download the entire engineering code repository, a standard service account model might allow it if the permissions were loosely defined. A modern, identity-first security model would recognize this as a deviation from intent—an anomaly—and block it immediately.

The "Black Box" of AI Decision Making

Another challenge is opacity. When a service account fails, you check the logs. When an AI agent takes an unexpected action, the "why" can be buried in millions of parameters within a Large Language Model (LLM).

This is why **Model Context Protocol (MCP)** and other governance layers are becoming critical. We need visibility not just into *access*, but into the *context* of that access.
